When I sat down to pick the most suitable route to Copenhagen I never imagined that it would take me a whole mini research and days of sailing across the Internet to come up with a student-budget-friendly solution. For starters, Slovenia is far from the best place to plan your trips from despite being at the crossroads of Europe. That becomes self-evident when you compare the size of the capital city’s main train station or airport with a not much larger country, for example Denmark. Everything is so tiny and expecting the world to open in front of your eyes when walking into the terminal building would border on insanity rather than utopia.

That’s why my first line of thought was to find a plane connection from any neighboring country: Italy, Austria, Hungary or Croatia, I even went as far as contemplating taking a train to Prague in Czech Republic and then flying up north – it would cost me less than anything that would involve a direct flight from Slovenia.

Another issue to think about was the actual traveling experience: if I took a train all the way to Denmark I would have a chance to see far more in that day or two than if I just hopped onto a plane and stepped down on Danish soil mere two hours later. But in the end getting to the promised Zealand as soon as possible and without any trouble (like losing my luggage or risk my hands falling off from carrying it around all the time) became more important than seeing the landscape through the window of a train and I opted for an airplane.

The only affordable connection that did make sense was Easyjet’s flight to London (which is the only low-cost flight this country has to offer) and then onward to Copenhagen the next morning. It seemed so easy when I compared it to the alternatives: no trains that I would have to hop onto if I took any of the many cheaper direct flights from airports in neighboring countries (and those indeed were numerous), no excessive driving anywhere since the airport is just a few kilometers away, no worries regarding anything but a simple stop and switch at London Stansted and then onward across the Northern sea to Zealand.

However, things never tend to go as planned, and just as I had no clue how challenging finding a feasible trip to Denmark can be it also never crossed my mind that getting to Denmark will not by far be any close to what I had planned…

Hopefully, this place will be flooded with blogging posts in the not so distant future… when I actually set foot in Zealand, that is. Or more precisely, Copenhagen.

I have no idea why  the word Zealand isn’t used more often, it seems like a great marketing ploy to me. Forget about New Zealand, it’s only a cheap, oversized mountainous copy of the real one! But they do have kiwi… and kiwis. I sense a lack of imagination there…

Until I start blogging, think about the possibility of Zealand as the last resort for the poor vanishing kiwi.
